When talking about hard and soft skills evaluation, questions about their purpose and usefulness will often come up and both employers and educators are looking for new ways to develop them and get the most out of the students and workers. Serious gaming can provide a solution to both and it can help students develop the skills the need for the modern workforce while enabling employers to save time and money training hew hires.
Soft Skills can be defined as the “combination of interpersonal people skills, social skills, communication skills, character traits, attitudes, career attributes, social intelligence and emotional intelligence quotients among others that enable people to effectively navigate their environment, work well with others, perform well, and achieve their goals with complementing hard skills.”
Hard skills are specific, teachable abilities that can be defined and measured, such as typing, writing, math, reading and the ability to use software programs. By contrast, soft skills are less tangible and harder to quantify, such as etiquette, getting along with others, listening and engaging in small talk.
We all know how important both hard and soft skills are in our lives, but how important are they in our professional careers? How many skills did you put on the last CV you have send? Many people aren’t yet aware of the importance of these skills and how they can shape our professional careers. Soft skills fulfil an important role in shaping an individual’s personality by complementing his/her hard skills. Employers are looking for a balanced combination of both hard and soft skills and they are choosing candidates that have these skills over those who don’t, or those who didn’t list them on their CV.
Serious gaming is developing hard and soft skills in students and new employees making them more effective in their learning and working environments. Students learn more effectively and employees are trained much more efficiently when using serious gaming methods over those who use traditional study or training methods. These new “digitally trained” employees are ready to perform their job duties sooner and students who use serious gaming to develop their soft skills are proven to be more successful in finding a career right out of university.
With the advancement of technology and the serious gaming industry growing, we will see an increase in use of gaming technology and more skills being developed this way.
